How to Stay Fitness Motivated and Accountable

Today I thought that it would be nice to feature one of my favorite trainers for Motivation Monday.  Chalene Johnson is one of my fav Beachbody trainers.  She and Autumn Calabrese of course.  If you haven't tried one of Chalene's workouts you should.  She has several great ones.

It can be hard to stay motivated when you’re on your own working towards a large goal. We all have things we want to accomplish on our own, from losing weight to working out, or getting a promotion at work and sometimes we can lose focus. Accountability or keeping yourself responsible for your progress can be tough because there are times we just don’t want to work out, or that chocolate cake sounds so much better than a salad. These accountability tips will help you find and stay motivated, and learn several ways of staying responsible to your goal.

Five layer goals
It may sound more like an appetizer than a tip, but layering your goals will help you achieve them. Think of a large goal you may have, whether that’s losing 20 pounds, staring a business, or running your household. Looking at the goal as it is seems very large and can be overwhelming, but if you break it down into manageable goals, you’ll quickly be on your way to achieving them. An example would be taking a goal of losing 20 pounds goal and breaking it into 5 pounds per month. Now instead of feeling like 20 pounds is a lot to lose, 5 pounds in a month is about a pound a week and feels much more attainable. Holding yourself to choices that facilitate losing a pound in a week is a lot easier than willing yourself to lose 20 pounds overall.

Get a partner
We all have goals we want to accomplish on our own, but sometimes having a partner really helps hold you responsible. Having a partner will provide support and someone to talk to about how things are going. Partners can be found online, if you don’t have someone in your life already that can help, and finding someone in your similar situation may be just the motivation you needed.

In your household you can make someone like your spouse or child an accountability partner by explaining what you want to accomplish and why. Maybe you want to give up drinking soda or eating candy. If you queue your husband or daughter into your objective they may help more than you think. In order to make this successful make sure you give them permission to help. Help may be calling you out when they see you with that candy, or allowing them to take it away. Make your goal clear and outline what you feel acceptable help would be from them. Choose people you trust, love and support, and be sure to give them permission first.
Apps
The cell phone is part of our daily lives, so having apps to hold us accountable make perfect sense. Having an app front and center on your phone will act as a reminder of your goal and help hold you to it. For every day accountability, I use Awesome Note, which provides not only my goals, but also a way to track my progress.
For health and fitness related goals I use My Fitness Pal to track what I eat and remind me that a few handfuls here and there can really derail my progress.
If you want to work on goals in all different areas of your life then Success Wiz is for you. It’s a very detailed app that can help you see which areas in your life you can work on and track your progress. Make sure you have at least an hour to devote to this app when you first sit down to use it; it’s easy to use but provides so many options you’ll want to really spend some time here setting things up.
I use the app Inspiration to provide daily scripture in my life. Often this is something I neglect and found that if I spend a few minutes reading scripture each morning I feel more centered and able to focus throughout the day. This app provides daily reminders to read as well as the actual scripture, and helps me to keep my perspective and provides patience.

Tell Yourself - I Am Going To Be Happy No Matter What!

“Don’t wait until everything is just right.
It will never be perfect.
There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions.
So what.
Get started now.
With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger,
more and more skilled, more and more self-confident
and more and more successful.”
–Mark Victor Hansen

I am guilty of waiting until everything is right, for instance, I am saving this outfit for the perfect occasion, only for me to gain weight and it's still hanging in my closet unworn, because that occasion wasn't what I deemed special. When in reality everyday is special. Each day, each hour, each minute, is special. Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one.

Happy people have an amazing attitude. They choose to be positive and grateful for what they have, even if it isn't much. That will determine how you're going to live the rest of your life. Don't think you have anything to be grateful for? Look a little harder, it's still exists. Ultimately, your greatest achievements are moments in time when what you’re doing allows you to see how wonderful your life already is.

The biggest enslavement we can do to ourselves is to fear what other people think.  You can't let what others tell you who or what you are.  Your life is more important than what people think of you.  Don't let them make you feel guilty for living your life.  It's YOUR life!  As long as you're not hurting anyone else, live it your way.
Don't let your past hinder your present and future.  Look straight ahead, forgive, move forward.  If your past didn't turn out like you'd hoped, it doesn't mean your future can't be better.  In the dark times we grow stronger.  Insight gives you the ability to rebuild yourself.  As long as your breathing it's never too late.  Today is a new day, a new beginning.
Life is a constant cycle.  It is forever changing, we need to adapt and change with it.  When one door closes another opens.  We can't control everything, let go of the things you have no control over.  Live, learn, forgive, and let go.
Some forces are out of your control, you can control how you react to things.  Everyone of us have positive and negative aspects, whether you're happy or not depends greatly on which aspects you focus on.  The best thing you can do for yourself is invest in your own personal development.  Invest your energy in things you can control, do your best, love generously, be truthful, and leave the rest to the Lord.
Will there ever be challenges?  Absolutely!  They make life interesting, overcoming them makes life meaningful.  Don't wait until everything is just right; it will NEVER be perfect.  With each step you take you will get stronger, more skilled, more confident, and more successful.
Tell yourself:  I will live a happy life no matter what!  No matter what happens, be grateful for what you are learning.  You won't enjoy life if you don't enjoy your challenges.
Smile, and value what you have.  Enjoy the people, events in your life.  I am having to learn that it's not all about achieving all the time. Make up your mind that you are going to be happy no matter what.
Count your blessings more often than you count your money, we would be a lot richer.  Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life for yourself.  I have been so engrossed lately in trying to grow my business, that I have neglected the most important things in my life.  Not good.
To be happy = Do your best and appreciate what you have.
To be unhappy = Comparing yourself to others and the things they have.
It is nice to have money for the things we need to buy, but it's also important to make sure you haven't lost track of the things that money can't buy.  Good friends and a loving family are worth their weight in gold.  It really is the little things that mean the most!  A long hug at the right moment.
Make your time count.  Do you wish your moments away?  You can ruin today by focusing on another time and place.  There is only now. I had this thought today as I was driving home from getting my labs done.  I have been creating my history, my legacy.. Did I let life slip me by without being aware of it?  What have I accomplished?  Did I leave good memories?  Happiness is the journey, open your eyes.  Don't miss out.
I know that you can't be happy 100% of the time. Let's face it, there is no such thing as constant happiness.  That's just not natural.
I feel I have held back on doing things in life because of what you are "supposed to do or who you are supposed to be" and I have finally broke those chains and I'm just trying to live life to the fullest and live from my heart and not my head all the time.

Focus on living a well-rounded happy life.  Work on your personal development and forget the things you can't change.  Life is too short to stress over everything.  Believe me I know a little about stress.  Stress causes numerous health problems.  We are striving to get healthy. :)

Summer Workout Motivation!

It is so easy to want to stay indoors during the hot summer months.  Staying inside laying around on the couch in the AC, but don't do it!  Fight that summer slump and get moving!  Here are some ways to help you stay fit and stupendous this summer.

1.  Start Your Day Early
First thing in the morning get some fresh air to keep you energized all day.  Go for a quick walk and do your stretches outside as soon as you wake up; try it at sunrise for a beautiful start to your day!  You'll be surprised by how much it will help you to feel upbeat.

2. Keep Cool and Be careful of the Sun
Learn how to stay cool and drink lots of water.  On hot humid days the summer heat makes you more susceptible to dehydration, so follow some rules.

It only takes 15 minutes for a heat stroke to occur.  When the humidity is high, sweat won't evaporate quickly and will prevent the body from releasing heat.

Signs of a heat stroke include: fatigue, illness, inattention, confusion, dizziness, dryness, headache, nausea and red, hot, dry skin that exceeds 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

-Don't exercise outside when the heat index reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.  Exposure to high heat and humidity can result in heat cramps or exhaustion.  The best time to exercise is early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
-Learn how to stay cool and hydrated on hot, humid days. The summer heat makes you more susceptible to dehydration, so follow these ground rules:
-Drink more water than you think you need. You should be drinking water regularly, not just when you feel thirsty. Don't forget to keep drinking water even while you're indoors. This will help you stay hydrated when you do go out in the heat.
-Don't drink alcohol or large amounts of sugary drinks.  These cause you to lose more fluids.
-Be prepared to beat the heat. Bring a small cooler wherever you go, with water, sport drinks and snacks. Add an ice pack to help you cool off after a workout.
Understand your risk. Children ages 0 to 4 should go inside to air-conditioning every hour. Their body temperature increases three to five times faster than adults. People over the age of 65 should be very cautious not to overexert themselves, especially those with a chronic health condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. These diseases make you more susceptible to overheating.
Wear loose, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Use sunscreen, and reapply as you sweat.  More about heat stoke here

3. Lighter Meals
Light foods go well with summer, so take the fresh approach to mealtime.  Visit your local farmers market if you don't grow your own garden.  Fresh fruits and veggies at mealtime, are great for summer, so get creative in the kitchen. Add water-based fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, and pineapple into your meals. Make your own Popsicle's with fruit.

If you are going on vacation, plan for the day.  Pack a cooler with ice, bottled water, snap peas, nuts, fruit like apples, pears, bananas etc. sandwiches with whole-grain bread, pitas, hummus, Greek yogurt.

4. Water Workouts
If you have a pool or access to a pool it will sculpt your legs, core, arms, shoulders and will help improve your cardiovascular health and flexibility. Water workouts are also less stressful for your joints because the water reduces your weight and makes you buoyant. This is why many athletes perform water workouts as they recover from an injury.
But remember, water increases UVA rays by 25 percent, so apply sunscreen often and don't forget to drink water.

5. Outdoor Activities
Most outdoor activities are burn calories naturally.  Like bike riding, walking the dog, going to the beach.

6. Stay Consistent
Consistency is key. Make sure to keep up with your workout regimen so your progress doesn't slide.

7. Indoor Exercise Programs
I have a wide variety of fitness programs available on DVD's for everyone, at any fitness level.  Our popular, effective, and complete programs help you achieve your fitness and weight loss goals.

Strive For Progress Not Perfection

Today is Motivational Monday!

Today I want to talk about Striving for progress and not perfection.  I have several autoimmune diseases, with a couple new ones added recently.  I have good days and bad days.   I am not doing so well with my workouts lately.  I just don't have the strength lately.  Some days I let it get me down.  I have to remind myself that I am striving for progress.  It is a slow process with the autoimmune diseases that I am struggling with. I tell myself that no matter how slow the process, you can't  let it get you down.  It helps me get through the dark patches on my journey.  I know that I have a few more pounds to lose and I keep telling myself that, I am a work in progress.

Exercise is hard when you're 100% healthy.  But when you have an autoimmune disease (a condition in which the immune system goes awry and attacks the body), you not only have to face all the regular obstacles to exercise, such as a lack of motivation, you also have to battle your own body, too.

One of the most difficult aspects of exercising when you have an autoimmune disease is that several of the most common symptoms can directly affect your ability to exercise comfortably, including fatigue, muscle weakness or cramping, heat sensitivity, and swollen, painful joints. However, with planning and care, you can exercise safely and not only increase your fitness, but also improve your confidence and quality of life.

For example, one of the conditions I suffer from is Hashimoto's disease.  Let's take a look at the condition and what that entails.

Hashimoto's disease
What it is: A condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid, a gland located at the base of your neck that helps the body use energy, stay warm and keeps the brain, heart and other organs working properly. Symptoms of the disease vary, and it often leads to hypothyroidism. (which I have) It may show up as only a slight feeling of fatigue or sluggishness, but it can also cause muscle aches and stiffness, particularly in the hips and shoulders, as well as muscle weakness in the lower body. If actual hypothyroidism develops, the symptoms are usually more severe.

Exercise Rx: Light exercise might be better than vigorous exercise for helping relieve, rather than exacerbating, muscle and joint pain. The primary goal of exercise with Hashimoto's is to burn calories to help offset the weight gain that so often accompanies the disease.

If you didn't reach a goal you set, don't let that get you down, you just remind yourself of this quote, and keep your head up.  You are not a failure, and don't be so hard on yourself.  I know how it feels to beat yourself up.  I was such a perfectionist,  and would beat myself up if I didn't reach my goal. I have had a rough go with that mentality.  I became severely depressed. Remember the small victories, they are important!!  Stop the negative self-talk!  It is dragging you down.  It may take you a little while to break the habit of negative talk, but you can do it!

If things don't go the way we planned, we tend to want to throw in the towel.  Suffering through the weakness, pain and decreased mobility of an autoimmune disease can certainly make you want to forgo your fitness routine. But exercise can help you manage your symptoms and stay healthy, as long as you progress slowly and adapt exercise to your needs.

The reason I have said all this with it being motivational day, is that if someone is going through the same thing, maybe this will help them.

Progress means making the effort to make your life extraordinary!!  You are a warrior!  Keep Going!
